Kade Nelson Athletics commissioner August 31, 2021
Position Assessment: The main thing that I have done as an athletics commissioner Is work the powder puff table for club rush. I created a google form for each position that a student could participate as for powder puff. There was a form for cheer, coaching, and playing. It was a fairly easy process but it made the process of signing people up go by more quickly and easily. I also set up the table and used powder puff jerseys to decorate the table while my partner made a sign so that the students would be able to find where they could sign up. I also helped the junior class set up their table for club rush because they have a lot of responsibilities to attend to. Along with setting up for club rush, I helped with the fencing committee for the Back to school dance so that we could plan where the fencing should go. I also made virtual flyers that the ASB account could post to publicize powder puff and club rush.
Professional Development: For the professional development portion of the class we researched careers that we were potentially interested in pursuing in our future. This research was for our mock interviews so that we would have a job chosen when the time comes for Morty to contact individuals to interview us.
Standing Committee: I have not been able to be a part of any standing committees this year mostly due to covid. This is because we have had less events and opportunities. I plan to be in more standing committees when I get the chance.
Special Committees: I have been a part of one special committee this year. The committee is the fencing committee. For this committee we went to the location of the dance which is near the football field and we planned where we wanted to put the fences. We had to make sure that every entrance to the dance location was covered except for the main entrance so that no one could sneak in. We also had to make sure that we had enough fence to fence in the location. As well as contact Mr. Ramierz about how much fencing we had and how to get fencing.
Mentorship Evaluation: Core Camp to present: With my mentorship partner Abby I have been able to create a new bond with someone who I would have probably otherwise not talked to very much. This is because she is in a different grade than I am and we probably would have not crossed paths very much given that we had not yet crossed paths in high school until this year. She has been able to give me valuable insight about junior and senior year since she has been through her junior year already and is now a senior. And I have been able to give her valuable insight into the program because of my experience in the program. Overall, I think that the Mentorship Idea was a very good one.
Concerns that I would like to be addressed: As beneficial and fun as it may be, I think we sit next to our class officers/people we share a position with too much. I have sat next to the same couple of people basically all year so far because we are always instructed to sit by these same people. Given the circumstances that we were faced with last year, I feel that I have not gotten to know the sophomores very well and now I do not know the freshmen very well either. I hope that we will be able to sit by new people and do more bonding activities in the future.
Positive Comment: My positive comment goes to Ava Brocchini, my partner for athletics. She has stepped up and done a great job so far and is doing really well for her first year. She did a great job during powder puff and has shared a lot of great ideas so far. I am sure that she will continue to be a great partner and help me to carry the massive workload of athletics commissioner. Good job Ava! My Impact: My impact this year has been to try my very best to keep people positive during the tuff times of Covid-19. It has gotten much better than last year which is what I try to remind people all the time. But it is still not perfect. And who knows if it will ever be perfect again. I try my best to encourage people to be active in the school and show spirit while they still can because who knows what the future may hold. I have been trying to make sure that everyone can enjoy their high school experience as much as possible just in case it gets ripped away from us yet again.
ASB Report October
Kade Nelson Athletics Commissioner October 12, 2021
Position Assessment: I have been extremely busy as athletics commissioner this month. My partner and I have been consumed in all things powderpuff. We kicked off powder puff by hosting a table at club rush where players, coaches, and cheerleaders would be able to sign up. We then hosted a meeting in the North gym on the following Thursday. We required people to sign in when they got to the meeting so that we would have a record of who was there and who was not. If people did attend the meeting they were not able to participate in powderpuff unless they gave us a heads up beforehand. At this meeting we discussed important dates regarding all things powderpuff. We went over when the practices, meetings, jersey handouts, and the game would occur. We also went over where all of these things would occur. My partner and I attended, took attendance, and supervised all powderpuff practices and events. I was incharge of talking to Mr. Wright regarding athletic clearance once the powderpuff game was coming up. I was also in charge of supervising the game. My partner and I had to talk to many teachers, staff members, and students in order to make this event run smoothly. We had to accomplish many different tasks throughout this event such as jersey handouts, paperwork, and setting up for the event itself. Prior to the event we had to collect jerseys, clean up trash on the field, put the microphones back, shut off the microphones and the scoreboard, and make sure that all flags and balls were collected and put away. We had to complete a procedure card as well as thank you cards for the events. We are currently in the process of collecting the rest of the jerseys as well as updating the billing list with the names of players who did not turn in their jerseys.
Standing Committee: I have not been able to be a part of any standing committees recently given that I have been very busy planning, setting up, running, and cleaning up powderpuff. Now that powderpuff is almost done I plan to join many standing committees in the future.
Special Committee: The special committee that I have been a part of is the fencing committee for the dance. We fenced the dance for the back to school dance and had to use a few pieces of fencing, some cones, and caution tape to fence in an area for the student body to stay in. This helped keep the dance contained and also helped prevent people from sneaking in. It was a fairly easy job once we knew what needed to be done. Cleaning up was also not too difficult and I think we could do this pretty easily if we ever needed to do it again.
Mentorship Evaluation: My partner and I have gotten to know each other a lot better since our last ASB report. We went on a double lunch date with Anthony and Gideon, and we have started to talk a lot more, not only in leadership but also when we see each other around the campus. I really have enjoyed having her as a mentorship partener because I have been able to give her valuable advice regarding leadership and she has been able to give me valuable advice regarding my junior year and the beginning of my senior year. I look forward to more connections and bonds with my mentorship partner and I hope to be able to teach her much more and learn from her much more.
Concerns: I am concerned that some people in the class are not sharing their opinions enough. I tend to see the same group of people sharing their opinions and imputing their thoughts and ideas into the group discussions while a large group of people remain quiet or do not pay attention at all. This is not a huge issue but I think that it is important for everyone to share their opinion because it makes our class much more diverse and it makes it much easier to succeed when we have more inputs and multiple perspectives. I look forward to seeing these people start to emerge from their shell and start to add more to the conversations that we have in class.
Positive Comment: A positive comment that I have is that the junior class officers did a great job with all things Homecoming. I was very pleased with how everything turned out and I am sure that we can win it next year. They appeared to have great communication and preparation for everything regarding homecoming and for the most part everything turned out very well. I know that they did a large majority of this work on their own so I have to give them props for getting second place despite the many challenges that they might have faced. Another great thing that I noticed from the Junior Class was that they did a great job publicizing spirit and over all the junior class did pretty well with spirit during homecoming week. Let's win it next year, juniors!
Change: The only thing that I would like to change about the class so far is interaction with the freshman. To be honest I still do not know them all very well and still have a relatively difficult time trying to remember everyone’s name. I feel that I have not gotten the time to talk to many of them and I feel that I lack a connection with almost all of them. I look forward to being able to make new connections with the freshmen representatives throughout the school year and hopefully next year as well.
My Impact: My most important impact so far has been running powderpuff. This was a great experience for not only the student body but also the community of Ripon to get together and share an event that can bring us all together safely, and bring some joy to the town. I heard a lot of positive feedback from the players who told me that they had a great time and are really looking forward to next year. From the few seniors who played I was told that they really enjoyed their last powderpuff and that they will really miss it when they are gone next year. And I heard a lot of positive feedback from the community and from parents regarding the game and the cheerleaders. Everyone was super happy that we were finally able to get a cheerleading team for the game for the first time in a really long time. Overall, powderpuff was a great event that was able to bring joy and inclusivity to the school and community.
ASB Report November-December
Name: Kade Nelson Position: Athletics Commissioner Date: December 7, 2021 Position Assessment: So far in December, as one of the athletics commissioners at Ripon High School, the main thing that I have been able to do regarding my job position is to help decorate for senior nights or assist in any way possible. I have reached out to a few different people in an attempt to help with senior night and I either received no response or I was told that I was not needed. Given all of the events that leadership has to plan and follow through during this time of the year, Athletics Commissioners do not have any specific events to deal with. Given that I have not had any specific events to take care of, I have been helping my class with as much as I can. I was able to help with the planning of the junior class tree, I was also able to help with dude be nice, as well as winterfest. Since I do not have a specific job within any of these events, I have been talking to the Junior class officers and offering my help in any way that I can. Some of the ways that I have been able to help have been by offering advice, helping make decisions and participating in votes, and by helping plan how these events should go to be successful. On top of helping out my class, I have also been trying to help out other classes, as well as the entire leadership class as a whole. I have been able to do this by writing the names of the student body on snowflakes in order to make every student feel involved, as well as by helping the Vice Presidents of each class as well as the ASB president by counting and collecting coins for the blanket drive. This past weekend I spent roughly four hours at the school cutting out wrapping paper, measuring doors, cutting out bows, and constructing the wrapping paper, bow, and tag onto each teacher's door. Unfortunately, a few people were unsure how they should effectively do this process and their doors did not look great so we decided to take it down and redo their doors. I helped these people with their doors so that the second time they would look a little bit better than before.
Standing Committee: I have not had the opportunity to be in any standing committees recently but I hope to join one when I get the chance. Fencing committee will be back towards the end of the year I think and I will be able to assist in that.
Special Committee: I have been a part of two special committees since the last ASB meeting. Dude Be Nice was the first committee that I was a part of, and the most recent special committee that I have been a part of was the VP’s blanket drive. For Dude Be Nice I was able to help publicise the event as well as help the junior class in any way that they needed. This included doing many small tasks such as contacting people and giving advice as to how the live stream should go. For the VP’s blanket drive, I was able to help by going into classrooms and collecting the coin jars from the teachers in order to total up how much money the upper and lower classmen had raised. The next way that I was able to help was by counting the coins and writing the total down in order to add up the total of all of the coins. I look forward to joining more special committees when I get the chance.
Mentorship Evaluation: Even though I am the mentor of a senior while I am a junior I feel as though I have been able to teach Abby a lot of valuable lessons throughout our friendship so far. I really enjoy having her as my mentorship partner because I think that if she was not my partner I probably would not have gotten the chance to ever really become friends with her. While I have been able to teach her many valuable leadership skills, she has been able to teach me many important skills to make it through the rest of my junior year and the first half of my senior year given that she has already made it through these times in her life. I would be perfectly fine with sticking with Abby as my mentorship partener or having someone else in the future so that I can get to know someone else on a deeper level.
Concerns: The main concern that I have is a lack of focus and work ethic during the class. I know that I suffer from this as well but it seems to be a trend during the class around this time in the year. I am sure that it is just because finals is coming up and people are very stressed out and busy right now but not focusing and getting work done in class will only result in more stress over time. I am sure this will go away over the break and people will come back re-energized and ready to complete the next half of the year but maybe there is something we can do now? Yoga? Meditation? A period to say Hi’s and Lo’s?
Positive Comment: The sophomore class did a great job with winter formal and deserve a lot of thanks and appreciation for all of the hard work that they went through. The tent with heaters was a great idea and having the dance on the tennis courts was a great idea as well. There were a few small problems but nothing is ever perfect and over all the Sophomore class did a fantastic job with everything winter formal and I could not be more proud. Great Job Sophomores!
One Change: I spoke with Makenzie about this and we both have seemed to agree that positivity is the greatest factor that we are lacking as a class. Over all the moral of the class is not super negative but it could definitely be a little more positive. I used to believe that being positive would not change anything and that it was better to be negative because then if something bad happens then at least you are already expecting it, but overtime I have found out that that is entirely wrong. Having a positive mindset can completely change a course of events and can transform something negative into something very positive and successful. All in all, the class could use a little more positivity.
My impact: The main impact that I have been able to make on the people around me is by cheering them up, putting them in a better mood, or by overall just making them a more positive person for a little while. I love to put people in a better mood when they are feeling down and I feel like it is one of my best qualities. I try to cheer people up by making them laugh or by distracting them from their situation with something positive for a little while. I try to be as positive as I can all of the time even if I am going through something rough at the time because I know that negativity is contagious and you can really affect the people around you by being super negative.
ASB Report January-February
Kade Nelson Athletics Commissioner 2/9/2022
Position Assessment: As an athletics commissioner I have not been super busy in the past few months. The main two events that the athletics commissioners are in charge of is powder puff and the student body dodgeball tournament. Given that powder puff has already been taken care of I have not dealt with anything powderpuff in the last few months. We are unsure if we will be able to hold a student body dodgeball tournament but we really hope we can. I wrote a proposal for the dodgeball tournament and gave it to Mr. Wrangle to look over and hopefully approve. Given the amount of people that have been allowed to attend the recent basketball games in the North Gym, we think and hope that Mr. Wrangle will approve of the dodgeball tournament given that there would be significantly less people in the gym and everyone would be wearing a mask unlike the basketball games. Apart from writing this proposal I have been looking to help anyone that I can and I have been taking every opportunity that I have been given to help the other classes, especially my own class, with any help that they might need. This includes writing the names of members of the student body on snow flakes or four leaf clovers of something along the lines of this. I helped my class with the construction and transportation of our class shopping cart for winterfest. I also completed my speech for the class and I am currently working on elections for ASB Vice President. I have been publicizing as much as possible and I finished filming my speech roughly a week ago. Hopefully all goes well with the ASB elections.
Professional Development: I have not been able to do a whole lot for the professional development side of things during the past few months. I have contacted the professional that is going to interview me to make sure that he is able to interview me and to introduce myself. I have also reached out to two other professionals that I would like to volunteer with, intern with, or work for. I reached out to the church that I attend in hopes to begin volunteering there more frequently to boost my community, survive and gain experience. I have also reached out to Mrs. Ngyuen in hopes of working for or interning for her so that I can gain experience with the Business Administration side of things. I hope to be able to gain more experience in the months to come and to learn much more about what I would like to do in the future.
Standing Committee: I have been trying my best to work with the Publicity and Spirit standing committee throughout the last few months as often as I can. I have been doing this by helping with spirit counts if the spirit commissioners ever need help and by publicizing every event. I have been doing this either by word of mouth, or by reaching out to people on social media in order to publicize events. I think this worked well given how good of a turn out we had on everything but a backpack day. I hope we will be able to have that spirit day again given how fun it was and given how much participation we got.
Special Committee: The main thing that I was able to help with regarding special committees was to help my class with winterfest. I was able to do this by helping with the transportation and creation of the junior class shopping cart. I also helped by offering my advice and experience with the creation of the window as well as the pillars. I did not directly help create these two things but I helped with the design of both of them.
Mentorship Evaluation: I really like the mentorship program because I have been able to create a new bond with someone who I would have probably otherwise not talked to very much. If she was not my mentorship partener I probably would not have become very close with her because I do not have a lot in common with her and we most likely would not have crossed paths. She has been able to give me valuable insight about junior and senior year since she has been through her junior year already and is now a senior. I have been able to help her with any questions that she has had in leadership this year and I have been able to give her valuable advice about the program.
Concerns that I would like to be addressed: One concern that I have with this semester is that everyone is a little too stressed and could use a little bit of a break. Given the speeches, elder projects, and especially elections that have been going on, I know that everyone is very stressed and tired. I think that it would be very beneficial for the class to do praises soon and just take a little bit of a break. Apart from this, I think that the class is running very smoothly and doing very well.
Positive Comment: I would like to give a positive comment to April Yan. April has helped me out a lot this year and has over all really stepped up as a leader. I have been able to depend on her for anything that I need help with and I know that she is someone who I can always count on. She gave me some really good advice with both of my speeches for leadership and she has given me some really good advice regarding studying for AP US History. I am very grateful for the friendship that I have with April and cannot thank her enough.
One Change That I Would Like to See: A change that I would like to see is I would like to be able to sit next to different people more often. Besides this week, we have sat next to the same people for the entire second semester so far. I really like who I sit next to so I do not have a big problem with this but it would be nice to be able to sit next to new people for a while. I like the ability to talk to different people and create new friendships especially with the freshmen who I do not know very well yet.
My Impact: The main impact that I have made so far this semester and in the past few months is that I have been trying my very best to make everyone on the campus feel involved and welcomed into the Ripon High School culture. I have been trying to talk to new people and especially freshmen so that I can diversify who I know and make people feel welcomed to the school. I know that it would have made a big difference in my freshman year if an upperclassman came up and talked to me and I hope that I am making a difference in some of the freshman's years as well. Other than this, I have been trying to be as spirited as possible and I have tried to spread the word of events at Ripon High.
ASB Report February-March
Kade Nelson Athletics Commissioner 4/13/22 Position Assessment: I have been quite busy since my last asb report in the beginning of February. As Athletics Commissioner I have been very busy with the planning, executing, and debriefing of the Annual Ripon High School dodgeball event. This event had to be planned at the very last minute due to the fact that we did not have confirmation that the event could be held until around one week before we were supposed to officially start publicizing the event. However, I think the event turned out very well and was a great success and I heard a lot of positive feedback from many students as well as staff. We started off the event by meeting with Mr. Rangel to confirm that we could hold the dodgeball tournament. We then talked to chaperones to see who would be able to help with the event. Then we spread the word that we would be having a dodgeball tournament. After this we created the dodgeball instagram account in order to publicize the event and post daily updates. In order to inform the students of the event, I asked the class to publicize the dodgeball tournament and instagram account. I then wrote an announcement to let the student body know that we will be having a dodgeball tournament. We also had to make sure that we had leadership students signed up to help clean up trash after the tournament each day of the week.I created an email and a google form in order for students to sign their teams up and the event kickstarted from there. We had 12 teams which is the most teams we have ever had and we plan on switching back to 8 teams next year because 12 teams did not work as well as we had hoped. Overall, the tournament went very well and I am very pleased with how the event turned out. Apart from this, I have been helping as much as possible with my class activities and prom.
Standing Committee: The Standing Committee that I have been able to be a part of is the fencing committee. Our goal is to acquire enough fencing to fence in the end of the year dance. In order to do this we had to present our plan at the challenge, make sure we had enough caution tape, and email Vice Principal Ramierez in order to get the fencing. Unfortunately, Mr. Ramierez did not get the chance to reply to my email or my follow up email. I emailed Mr. Rangle who set up an in person meeting with me. We met and talked about how much fencing we would need and when and where we would need it. He told me to check to make sure that the sprinklers are not on for the night of the back to school dance. He told me that we would be able to get the fencing and that it would be exactly where we needed it and when we needed it. Overall, this committee has gone well and I look forward to leading it and training underclassmen next year.
Professional Development: In order to develop professionally, I have been trying to learn more about the career of financial advising so that I will be able to do well in my interview but also so that I will have more knowledge about my future career. I hope to be able to study more on this career choice and learn more about it from my uncles who do this for a living and from my interviewer. I also would like to attempt to get an internship this summer if possible. This would help me learn a lot about the world of financial advising and hopefully make me more marketable for potential colleges and jobs in the future.
Special Committee: The main Special Committee that I have been able to work with has been the Challenge Committee. I have been mostly involved with the fencing aspect of the committee in order to ensure that we have enough fence to fence in the end of the year dance. After I had completed my tasks for the fencing committee, I was able to join another committee and give my input on certain ideas regarding the staff and student body. I look forward to seeing the class succeed in the Challenge!
Mentorship Evaluation: I personally really like the mentorship program and hope that this is used for years to come because it has been very helpful for many of the students in the class and I have heard from many people that they are very pleased with this program. The mentorship program has helped me gain valuable insight on the life and school life of a senior at Ripon High School. This is because I am the mentor partner of a senior. Even though I am younger than she is, I know that I have been able to give her a lot of good advice and insight into the program for her first year in leadership. She has also been able to teach me many things that I am very grateful for.
Concerns: The main concern that I have is that the class is going to get too stressed out with all of the AP tests coming up and all of the SAT’s and finals and things like that. Once spring break is over, the last month of school will be almost here and that is when the leadership class will be extremely busy with both things regarding leadership as well as other important things in the lives of the students of this class. I hope that we will be able to get at least one class period every other week to just chill and focus on our mental health.
Positive Comment: I have a positive comment for Gabbi Ilardi and all of the hard work that she has been putting in for renaissance. Renaissance has to be one of the most difficult and time consuming projects that the leadership class has to deal with. And most of this work falls on 3 people which makes it extremely time consuming and stressful for those three students. Both of Gabbi’s partners have also done a great job as well. Gabbi has done a great job training and preparing them for next year and I am sure that they will do just fine without her.
One Change: One change that I would like to see in the leadership program is more time spent doing activities that allow us to get to know one another better. It is almost the end of the year and I feel like I am still learning new things about my classmates every week. I have formed many close bonds with a lot of students in the leadership class and I am very thankful for these bonds but I also hope to be able to create deeper connections with these students as well as better connections with the students that I have not yet gotten the chance to know as well as I would like to.
My Impact: The main impact that I have been able to have on the class and the school is to always be as positive as possible. I always try to talk to new people and be as nice and friendly as possible to the students around campus, especially the underclassmen because I know that a small act of kindness can go a really long way in some people’s lives. I always try my best to keep the class happy and lively by making people laugh or by just trying to be as positive as possible all the time. I will continue to do this for the rest of the time that I spend at Ripon High School, The Greatest High School in the World.
ASB Report May - April
Kade Nelson Athletics Commissioner 4/13/22 Position Assessment: I have not been super busy with things that directly come from my job description, however, I have been keeping myself very busy by helping others in the class, my junior class, and by helping morty setup and clean up events. I helped Morty set up for the Tribe Award a couple of weeks ago. I helped set up 44 chairs in two groups so that each seat could be seen by the audience and still be able to see the podium. I also helped Morty set up for the College reveal night just a fews days ago. We set up red carpets, the balloon arch, and the tables for the students. I then went to the event and stayed to help clean up afterwards. We cleaned up the balloon arch and the red carpet and the janitors took care of the tables because they had to set up for AP testing the next morning. Apart from that, I was able to help my class with prom as much as possible. Along with the various things that I have listed, I also worked with the spirit commissioners to update the Ripon High Spirit plaque, as well as the dodge ball plaque. I provided a detailed explanation of what we would like to be added and updated to the plaques, communicated with the lady who updates the plaques, and picked up and dropped off the plaques to her house.
When we arrived at the dance on May 7th, all of the fencing was already set up for the most part. I helped set up one of the last fences and told Morty the plan for where we were supposed to put all of the fencing once the dance was over. Overall, this committee has gone well and I look forward to leading it and training underclassmen next year.
I look forward to helping with fencing and many other committees during the challenge next year. I was also able to help set up for the college reveal night and the pride tribe award.
Professional Development: I have been able to develop professionally a lot throughout this year. I have been gifted the opportunity to interview with a financial advisor who is a professional in his field of work. I learned a lot during my interview with him and I hope to be able to interview with him again in the future. Apart from this interview I have been able to develop professionally in a number of ways. I have been volunteering as much as possible and I have been able to research my potential future career a lot.
Mentorship Evaluation: I really like the mentorship program and hope that this is used for years to come because it has been very helpful for many of the students in the class and I have heard from many people that they are very pleased with this program.
Concerns: The main concern that I have is that next year we will have a loss of experience because the seniors are leaving. The seniors are the only class that have been able to experience every event. With the only class with the full highschool experience leaving I am worried that the culture of Ripon High School and the culture of the leadership class at Ripon High School will also change. I am sure we will be able to figure everything out and Morty will be able to give us much of the valuable insight that we will need.
Positive Comment: My positive comment is for Naomi. Naomi has been the very best ASB president that I have worked with in my three years in high school. She has taught the class a lot, demonstrated many great leadership qualities, and been a great friend and role model over all. I hope she enjoys her time at Cal Poly and I am sure she will do great things.
One Change: One change that I would like to see in the class is that I would like the seating in the class to change more often. I really like the people that I sit by but I have sat by the same people for almost the entire second semester. It has kind of restricted me from having the chance to get closer with people who I do not know super well yet. I look forward to the new seating chart next year but I will miss sitting by the people who I sit with now because I really like who I sit by and I have had a great time in this seating chart this semester.
My Impact: The main impact that I am able to have in my classes is by staying as positive as possible. I attempt to always have a positive attitude that will hopefully wear off on others. I have been trying to stay positive and also keep others positive as we all try to get through AP testing week and enter finals week very soon.
