Kade Nelson Athletics Commissioner September 1, 2022
Position Assessment: A lot has already begun for athletics commissioners at Ripon High! We had the black light rally to kick off fall sports and the school year. This was overseen by the athletics commissioners while the rally commissioners did most of the planning and executing of the event. We have also been very busy creating social media posts to announce the sports games that are coming up. We have started a new form of gratitude for our student body in the form of Athlete of the month. For athlete of the month we choose two athletes who have done an outstanding job in their sport, while still demonstrating excellent character outside of their respective sport. We create a social media post for each student athlete, interview each student athlete, and create an announcement that is read all week to tell who the athletes of the months are and how you can learn more about them. The biggest event that we have coming up is powder puff. We have taken many steps in order to make sure that powderpuff goes smoother than ever. We hosted a powder puff sign up during club rush where we had almost a fourth of the school sign up to participate in some way during powderpuff. We have also created three announcement forms to help students know what is required of them to participate in powderpuff, and where they can sign up to participate. We will also be hosting an informational meeting on September 8th during lunch in the north gym. I personally am very excited for powderpuff to start.
Professional Development: This summer I was able to develop professionally a few different times. I spent a few days with my uncle in colorado (a financial advisor who is an idol to me) and we spent some of this time discussing what I should start doing now to set myself up for success in the future. I was also able to contact another one of my uncles (also a financial advisor) and have a similar conversation with him.
Standing Committee: The main thing that I have been able to help contribute with is pride tribe. I have been doing my best to get the student body involved in as many ways as possible and to show their school spirit. I unfortunately was not able to help with the pride tribe table during club rush, but I was trying my best to publicize. I look forward to joining more standing committees in the future especially during homecoming!
Special Committees: I was involved in the poster committee during the first month of school. We came to school early two days in order to make posters for the black out rally which we also used for the BTSD. I also helped with the “curtain wall committee”. I came to school early in order to assemble the PVC pipe walls with curtains on them in order to make sure that everything was ready for the dance.
Mentorship Evaluation: Core Camp to present: I really like the mentorship program and I hope that we continue to use this for years after I leave RHS. I think it is a great way to provide insight to the underclassmen or first time leadership students. While there is typically an older student who has been in leadership for a long time who does not have much to learn, I think that they can still learn a lot from their mentor even if they happen to be a freshman or first time leadership student. I have enjoyed getting to know my mentorship partner and I look forward to the rest of the year.
Concerns that I would like to be addressed: The main concern that I have is the seating chart. While I understand that it is important to make sure that people are focusing and doing their work, I also think it is important to meet new people and get to know them well. And I feel that this is impossible if we sit near the same few people for a long period of time.
Positive Comment: My positive comment goes to Ava B. She has really stepped up from last year and I can already see the difference. She has been doing a fantastic job with the social media posts and she is able to make them very quickly and effectively. She has also been very willing to help and learn which has taken a lot of pressure off of me. I know that we will be a great pair this year for all things athletics and we will both be able to teach our apprentice, Nathan, a lot. Nathan has also been doing a really good job and has been very open to helping and learning whenever he can!
My Impact: I always try my very best to involve the student body as much as possible in every way that I can. The main way that I have been able to do this this year is by showing my spirit at school and especially at football and volleyball games. I have been trying my best to go all out and be positive all the time. Another way that I have been able to impact the campus of RHS is by being friendly and trying to get to know strangers, especially underclassmen. I have met many new people and hopefully made them feel welcome at our beautiful campus.
ASB Report September - HOCO
Kade Nelson Athletics Commissioner October 17, 2022 Position Assessment: The athletics commissioners of Ripon High have been extremely busy in September and the first half of October. We have been tasked with running the annual powderpuff game. We started off by submitting an announcement form announcing when signups would be. We also asked the class to publicize when signups would be on social media. We then set up a table at club rush where the student body could stop by to sign up to participate in powderpuff. We had over two hundred students sign up to participate in powderpuff. After signups we held a meeting in the north gym where we discussed the rules and regulations, and where we gave out the code to the remind for cheer, players, and coaches. We then began to start the process of working with Mr. Wright on athletic clearance in order to make sure that it was safe for everyone participating. We began practices at lunch every Tuesday and Thursday for the next three weeks. The week of the powderpuff game we passed out jerseys to seniors and freshmen on Monday. We then passed out jerseys to juniors and sophomores on tuesday. The powderpuff game was held on Thursday and was very successful. Throughout this process we had to work with many teachers and staff at RHS to make sure that the game would be properly regulated and that everyone was safe to play. We collected jerseys at the end of the game and are now beginning the process of making sure we got all of the jerseys back. Once we have accounted for all jerseys and updated the bill list, if necessary, we will be done with powder puff. The athletics commissioners have also been working hard on athlete of the month. I also helped my class with all things HOCO as much as possible.
Professional Development: Given how busy I have been with all things powderpuff, I have not been able to do very much professional development since the last ASB meeting. However, I took a trip to UCLA to tour the campus and see if UCLA is a school that I would be interested in. I have also started college applications and have been doing a little research about potential career choices that I may be interested in.
Standing Committee: The main standing committee that I have been able to help contribute with is pride tribe. I have been doing my best to get the student body involved in as many ways as possible and to show their school spirit. I also have been trying to offer my expertise and help in any ways possible. I look forward to joining more standing committees in the future.
Special Committee: In the month of October I have been working with the Senior Class HOCO Special Committee in order to make sure that all things hoco related such as the lip sync, float, window decorations, gym decorations, and lemonade stand go well. I have also helped with the HOCO Publicity standing committee where I created an announcement form for the night rally. I was also in charge of the red carpet committee for the HOCO candidate reveal.
Mentorship Evaluation: Core Camp to present: I really like the mentorship program and I feel as though it will really benefit the newcomers to leadership as well as the elders. I know that I have been able to help my mentor with a lot of leadership related things as well as a few things outside of leadership. I have also been able to offer my insight as not only an elder to this program but also an elder and senior to the school. I hope that my relationship with my mentor continues to grow and I hope that I continue to be able to help my mentor in any way possible.
Concerns that I would like to be addressed: A concern that I would like to have addressed is the high stress and tension that has developed between the class. I know that this is mostly due to homecoming but I feel like we need a “team-bonding” day or something along those lines in order to destress and rekindle some bonds that some students may have damaged between classmates. Overall I think the class as a whole has done a good job with dealing with the stress of homecoming but I also know that some groups would benefit from a “team-bonding-like” day.
Positive Comment: My positive comments go to Ava and Nate, my two fellow athletics commissioners, for doing such an outstanding job with powder puff and homecoming. We all worked together and evenly distributed the workload throughout powderpuff and homecoming and everything went very smoothly. I could not ask for two better people for the job and I am extremely grateful for their hard work and readiness to help with anything at any point in time. I am 100% positive that we can handle all of the athletics commissioners' jobs with extreme success this year, and I am very excited to see how everything goes.
One change that I would like to see: One change that I would like to see is a large decrease in the negative energy of the class. Similar to my concern, I know that most of this negative energy is due to homecoming and stress, and will soon go away. However, we need to all recognize that no one is perfect and that we are all in this together. I would love to see people apologize and fix some of the relationships that may have been damaged during homecoming.
My Impact: I always try my very best to involve the student body as much as possible in every way that I can. The main way that I have been able to do this this year is by showing my spirit at school and especially at sporting events. I have been trying my best to go all out and be positive all the time. Another way that I have been able to impact the campus of RHS is by being friendly and trying to get to know strangers, especially underclassmen and the staff. I have met many new people and hopefully made them feel welcome at our beautiful campus.
ASB Report November
Kade Nelson Athletics Commissioner November 14 2022
Position Assessment: This month the athletics commissioners at Ripon High School have not been very busy. We have had two main tasks since our last ASB meeting. The first task was to contact every single senior athlete asking for their favorite picture of themself playing their sport. We then took every one of these pictures and created a canva post honoring each and every senior athlete at RHS. The other main task that we had was to contact the two athletes of the month that we chose. We asked them a series of interview questions and created a canva post for each of our athletes. Our first athlete of the month was Gabbi Illardi. She is a senior who plays golf. Our second athlete of the month was Teo West. He is a sophomore who plays water polo. Apart from these two main tasks, the athletics commissioners have been trying to keep themselves busy by helping our classes as much as possible. I have also been helping Morty with updating four plaques which have just recently been finished.
Standing Committee: The main standing committee that I have been able to help contribute with is the pride tribe. I have been doing my best to get the student body involved in as many ways as possible and to show their school spirit. I also have been trying to offer my expertise and help in any ways possible. I look forward to joining more standing committees in the future.
Special Committee: The standing committee that I have been a part of is the CASL report committee. My group has been assigned the topic of learning from our mistakes and failures. This has been a fairly easy process because our leadership program has done a very good job at creating a program that is always learning and growing.
Concerns that I would like to see addressed: The main concern that I have is that people are not cleaning up the library after class each day. There is not a classroom on campus that is big enough to fit our very large leadership class and it is very generous of Mrs. Ulrich to allow us to use the library every day. I find it very disrespectful to her that the class has been leaving the library a mess for her to clean up and deal with. I have noticed that the class has gotten much better at cleaning up but we should be making sure that the library is left spotless every day.
Positive Comment: I would like to give a positive comment to Elias. He always has such a fun and happy personality in class and it really lightens the mood of the class. I have had many really good conversations with him and I feel like I can talk to him about pretty much anything. I have really enjoyed getting to know Elias this year and I think he will be a very valuable asset to the program for the rest of his time at Ripon High School.
One Change that I would like to see: One change that I would like to see is more help and support for the underclassmen (especially the freshmen). Most of us have been a freshmen in the leadership program before and we all know how stressful it can be especially with how scary Morty can be (just joking Morty). I have been trying to make sure that they all feel comfortable and I have been trying to help in as many ways as possible. I think they would especially appreciate some help from the junior and senior females in the class who I think they would feel slightly more comfortable talking with given that every freshman is a female this year.
ASB Report December
Kade Nelson Athletics Commissioner December 15, 2022
Position Assessment: Since our last ASB formal meeting not much has changed for the athletics commissioners. We have been working on our athlete of the month like usual. We also took a workday class period to sit down and talk about dodgeball and how we plan to have a successful dodgeball even this year. I plan on creating a team with Perez and stacking this team full of senior boys with the hopes of winning the whole tournament and getting Mr. Perez his first dodgeball tournament win. I would also like to win this tournament because I have not been able to. I think my team can actually win it this year and I really hope it will go well.
Special Committee: The main special committee that I was able to be a part of is the door decorating committee. I went out with April and Gracie a few days before the door decorating day to measure doors and make sure that we had the correct dimensions for each door. Then we cut each sheet of wrapping paper out to make sure that it was the same size as each door. I am very glad that we got this done before the actual door decorating day because it made the process much easier and faster. I recommend that the leadership program continues to give extra time to get this done beforehand.
Mentorship Evaluation: Core Camp to present: I really like the mentorship program so far. I feel like I have been able to share a lot of really good information with my mentor partner and I feel like she has grown a lot throughout the first half of the year so far. I look forward to seeing how the rest of the year goes.
Concerns that I would like to see addressed: The main concern that I would like to see addressed in class is the freshman receiving more help from the class. They have been working hard but they are struggling because they are new to the program. This is very normal for the freshman to experience because they are new to the program and do not yet know how things work completely. However, just because this is normal for freshmen to experience does not mean that we should not try to make the process easier for them.
Positive Comment: A positive comment that I would like to share is that I have seen the Sophomore class officers working very hard. I have also seen the sophomores in general working very hard which has been nice to see. I am proud of their progression from freshman year and think they deserved a positive comment and some recognition for their hard work.
One change that I would like to see: One change that I would like to see is less curriculum seating. I like who I sit next to and I have a good time while I am sitting there but for some reason I feel like I am less productive when I am in curriculum seating then when I am sitting in class seating or mentor seating. I think this is because in my curriculum seating I sit by three students that are younger than me and do not have the same activities, projects, and assignments as me. When I sit in class or mentor seating I sit by people who have similar things to get done as I do.
ASB Report January
Kade Nelson Athletics Commissioner February 1, 2023
Position Assessment: The athletics commissioners have started to plan dodgeball and will be working closely with Mr. Perez this year given his love for this tournament and his experience with it in the past. We are going to make a much more efficient bracket than we did last year. This should allow us to have a losers bracket which will enable each team to play at least two games. I think we are going to stick to 10 person teams because that worked well last time. The athletics commissioners have also been busy making social media posts for athlete of the month as well as helping out our classes in any way that we can.
Standing Committee: I have been a part of the Dodgeball standing committee over the past few weeks. We will be working very closely with Mr. Perez for the dodgeball tournament which I am looking forward to. Another standing committee that I have been a part of is the elections committee. I have been working closely with some of the other senior leaders in the program in order to form questions for the interview process. Another standing committee that I will be a part of is the PVC project committee. This has not started yet but I am excited to see how it goes.
Special Committee: A special committee that I have been a part of is the 8th grade recruitment committee. I went to Park View Elementary school with Heaven to inform the 8th graders about the leadership program. I answered questions, gave a presentation, and got to spend some time with some of my past teachers which was really nice.
Mentorship Evaluation: So far I have really liked having Jenna as a mentor. This is my first time having a mentor partner that is not completely new to the program and it has been very nice. Jenna is very professional and already knows what she is doing for almost anything in the class. I have noticed that I have been able to learn a lot more from her insight than I have with previous mentors because of her knowledge and experience in the program.
Concerns that I would like to see addressed: The main concern that I have is that students who are not in the program next year might slack off and get lazy because they know that most of what happens for the rest of the year will not have a huge impact on their next year in school. I really hope this does not become a problem but it is always possible with elections so early.
Positive Comment: I would like to give a positive comment to Jenna for all of the hard work that she has been putting into the hearts. She has been very professional so far and has done a great job making sure that everything is executed perfectly.
One change that I would like to see: One change that I would like to see is more contribution from everyone in the class during class discussions. I wouldn’t say that there isn’t much contribution, however, I think people could contribute a lot more during class.
ASB Report (The Challenge)
1. The main committee that I have been a part of is the dodgeball committee. We have been tasked with planning the annual dodgeball tournament. Ava B. and Nathan have been helping me with this so far. We set up a meeting with Perez and discussed the general rules and things that needed to be discussed before the week before dodgeball starts. The main committee that I have been a part of for the challenge is the fencing committee. I emailed Mr. Rangel and contacted Mrs. Valdez about setting up a time when I could meet with Mr. Rangel to discuss fencing.
2. During the week I contributed mainly to the fencing committee. I served as the committee lead and tried my best to provide guidance to the other members of the committee and to also train Devin and Elias. Elias was not originally in the fencing committee but I talked to Mak about adding him as a trainee so that we would have a junior and senior in the program next year with the necessary skills to be successful with the end of the year dance next year.
3. For the week of the challenge I will be incharge of the fencing committee and making sure that everything regarding fencing goes smoothly.
4. For the first time all year that I can remember, the class was on task and working hard pretty much all the time. I rarely saw people messing around and when I did see this it was because they were finished with their work and did not need to be doing anything at that time.
5. Some of the cons that I saw during this week was that some people had significantly more work to take care of then others. This is something that we can’t necessarily avoid because there will always be people who are better at certain things and more reliable than others so it would be basically impossible to perfectly evenly delegate work to everyone.
6. During the formal presentation I will be talking about fencing as that is the committee that I was placed in charge of.
7. Overall I really like the event idea and I think we have done a great job so far. I think this could easily be one of the best challenges that we have put on and I think this is largely due to the amount of people who have been stepping up to help this week.
8. I am confident that this class will be successful in planning and executing this event.
9. They should be talked to about their lack of motivation to help the class and where it is coming from. They should then be punished accordingly (if necessary).
10. My favorite aspect of this event is the back to school dance and also the aspect of giving back to the community. I am most excited for the end of the year dance because it will be my last dance at RHS.
ASB Report - April and May
Kade Nelson Athletics Commissioner May 4, 2023
Position Assessment: Since the end of dodgeball the athletics commissioners have not had to do much. We have been working on athlete of the month and helping our classes when we have free time. I have been tasked with taking apart the old PVC pipe structures and repurposing them. I have had to cut them all apart into straight pieces. Then I used the model that Morty showed us and began to measure the pieces. My plan is to measure the total length of the pieces and use this to see how many of each piece of pipe I need to cut in order to make the most amount of PVC structures. This has been VERY time consuming and will unfortunately probably take up the rest of my time in the leadership class.
Standing Committee: The fencing committee is the only standing committee that I have been a part of in April and May. Given that I began the fencing process for the end of the year dance very early, I have not had to do very much over the last few months besides check up on things and occasionally remind Mr. Rangel to make sure he turns off the sprinklers on the day of the end of the year dance.
Special Committee: The special committee that I have been a part of during April and May was the Challenge. I have been tasked with being in charge of fencing for the end of the year dance. Another special committee that I have been a part of is the PVC piping committee.
Mentorship Evaluations: We have not been able to spend a lot of time together during April and May because of how busy we both have been with school work, as well as many extracurriculars. I hope to be able to spend more time with my mentor throughout the month of May.
Concerns that I would like to see addressed: The main concern that I would like to see addressed is the amount of people sitting around doing nothing in leadership when their peers are overwhelmed with work and could use help. The PVC project is a really big one and so far my only consistent helper has been Ewan. I don’t expect anyone to drop what they are doing to come help me but when they aren’t doing anything, a little help would be nice.
Positive Comment: My positive comment goes to Dillan Saltsman. Dillan is always so nice to everyone, he always has a smile on his face, and he will drop whatever he is doing to help you at a moment's notice. One thing that I really appreciate about Dillan is that he holds the door open for everyone after leadership every day. This may seem like a small gesture but it is very kind and makes my mood much better when I leave school every day.
